Each group obtains a Charter from Oxford House Inc., which is the umbrella organization for the international network of individual Oxford Houses. During early recovery for alcoholism and drug addiction, some members had to leave an institution in order to make room for an alcoholic or drug addict just beginning the recovery process. Other members were asked to leave half-way houses in order to make room for a recovering alcoholic or recovering drug addict who was ready to move into a half-way house. In Oxford House, each member equally shares the responsibility for the running of the House and upholding the Oxford House tradition. All aspects of Oxford House operations, from the acquisition of the house to the acceptance or dismissal of members, is carried out under democratic procedures. Each member has one vote and majority rule applies except that 80% of the members must agree in accepting new persons for membership. The OHI field staff travel to Oxford Houses, Chapters, and Associations to provide technical assistance and training, assist with expansion, and network in the community.
Oxford House
It is no more difficult than for an ordinary family to find a house to rent. Each Oxford House is an ordinary single-family house with two bathrooms and four or more bedrooms. Ideally several of the bedrooms are large enough for two twin beds so that newcomers, in particular, are able to have a roommate. This discourages isolation and helps the newcomer to learn or relearn socialization to get the full benefit of recovering individuals helping what is Oxford House each other to become comfortable enough in sobriety to avoid relapse. I have kids and I didn’t want them to see me like that so I got myself into treatment while I was in jail. I was placed on probation and given the opportunity to fix my life. I completed White Sands and moved on to the next step for iop because I knew I needed more help before I went out there. So, I spent 7 months there, then found a family called Oxford and there I found the feeling of being a part of something and a family of unconditional love.
How do I get into an Oxford House?
Many individuals in society are able to abide by the strict letter of any rule, regulation , or law. During the last days of our drinking or using drugs, most of us ceased to function as responsible individuals. We were not only dependent upon alcohol and/or drugs, but were also dependent on many others for continuing our alcoholic and/or drug addicted ways. When we stopped drinking or using oxford house drugs, we began to realize just how dependent we had become. For those of us who had been in institutions or half-way houses, resentments against authority were common.

Success can look so different and it comes in many different forms. I was able to gain full custody of my son, return to school, work a job within the recovery field, establish healthy relationships and have so many other countless blessings. While working on my own personal recovery, I have been given the opportunity to do service work within the community and even in my own House and others within my Chapter. I am able to share my experiences, good and bad, with my Oxford sisters who have moved into the house during my tenure here. In fact, Oxford House creates an environment whereby each member can more fully realize the benefits available from active AA or NA membership.
